The state of California is truly amazing. It’s the most populous state in the United States and it has some of the largest cities in the country if not the whole world. San Diego is the second largest city in California right behind Los Angeles. I love LA but I think it’s too boisterous. My favorite city in California is San Diego. This city has many fun attractions in San Diego for all its visitors and tourists. There are the miles and miles of pristine beaches. There are the countless museums and arts and cultural centers. You will also find some of the finest restaurants and shopping spots in this city. It’s impossible to visit all the fun attractions in this monumental city in one day or even in one week. That is why I decided to visit Balboa Park for a day because it offers all these fun attractions in one place. And this is how I had a whole day of fun in this amazing Park.
Despite the name, Balboa Park is not your typical public park. It’s actually an urban cultural center and park. There are very many fun attractions and amenities in this massive park. Covering 1,200 acres, Balboa Park is where everyone goes in San Diego, CA. Because I had only one day to spare in this exciting city, I decided to tour the park and have all the fun. All the fun attractions discussed below are found in Balboa Park.
The San Diego Zoo
I started my tour of Balboa Park at the world-famous San Diego Zoo. I took the recommended 35-min guided bus tour so that I could identify the hotspots in the Zoo. The San Diego Zoo covers 100 acres and it is home to over 3,700 rare and endangered animals representing about 660 species and subspecies. There are also 700,000+ plants in the Zoo. After taking the guided bus tour, I took a stroll on the many pathways in the Zoo. I visited various fun sections to see humongous reptiles, rare giant pandas, and many other amazing animals.
The Amazing Museums
I planned my day very carefully to accommodate all the fun activities in Balboa Park. After visiting the San Diego Zoo, I hit the museums. There are over 15 museums and cultural institutions in Balboa Park. I love trains so I started my museum tour at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum before heading to the San Diego Automotive Museum. I also visited the San Diego Air & Space Museum. I also made it to the Museum of Photographic Arts, the San Diego Museum of Art, the San Diego Museum of Man, and the San Diego Natural History Museum, before paying my respects at the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center.
The Beautiful Gardens
Balboa Park has some of the finest gardens that I have ever visited. From scented roses to gigantic ancient trees to lush grasslands, the park is intoxicating. I spent a lot of time just strolling through the grounds and enjoying the beauty and the wonderful smell of nature. It was relaxing experience.
Theaters And Arts & Cultural Centers
Balboa Park has many theaters and arts and cultural centers. I took some time to tour the Spanish Village Art Center before visiting the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater, the Old Globe Theatre, and the San Diego Junior Theatre. I enjoyed several shows in the evening before retiring to bed.
