Is Switching to a Tankless Water Heater Worth It?
Tankless water heaters are a great way to lower energy bills, maximize the space in your home, and use water
Hard water is the term used to describe water that has a high amount of calcium and magnesium. It is caused by water passing through limestone, chalk or gypsum deposits, picking up some of the sediment, and making its way into our homes through our pipes. Although hard water isn’t inherently dangerous, it can have some adverse effects on your home and your body. Let’s take a look at some of the effects and what Core Plumbing can do to protect your home and body.
Hard water is water with high mineral content with >7.5 gpg (grains per gallon) of calcium carbonate. Soft water has 0-3gpg, moderate/ideal water has 3.5-7gpg and hard water is anything above. Another measurement is by ppm (parts per million).
PPM Classification:
As the concentration of magnesium and calcium increases, the harder the water becomes. Hard water usually makes it more difficult to get soap to lather, hence the name – hard water.
San Diego County utilizes three water treatment facilities: Miramar, Alvarado and Otay. There is some overlap throughout the county but generally, Miramar Treatment Center services North County, Alvarado serves the city, and Otay serves South County. Unfortunately, San Diego is consistently in the top ten cities with the hardest water. But we are not alone! Ecopure found that 85% of people have hard water.
While it may be tempting to just grin and bear it when it comes to hard water, it’s hard to ignore the signs of hard water. Some of these signs may include:
Hard water buildup can be especially harmful to the inner workings of your water heaters, dishwashers and washing machines. These appliances are not equipped to filter out large amounts of sediment and minerals out of water.
When water absorbs the mineral content of rocks and soils, they eventually deposit back into your pipes, leaving limescale buildup, which leads to reduced water pressure and flow. You may notice that your sink, tub, and shower water pressures aren’t what they should be. This, in turn, can reduce the efficiency and lifespan of your appliances.
The buildup of sediment and residue in your appliances means that they have to work harder to retrieve and move water, resulting in a higher energy consumption.
Hard water can also have some very tangible effects on your health and hygiene. It can cause dry skin and skin irritation for those with sensitive skin. It can leave your hair dry and brittle, and it can also cause acne. Additionally, hard water dampens the effects of soap and may not leave you as clean after bathing.
Home water filtration systems filter contaminates out of drinking water. Generally, a hole house filter will prefilter the water to remove large particles, and then will pass the water through an activated carbon and copper-zinc filter , then it will pass through one more filter before heading into your home and to your faucet.
