Water heaters are beneficial, and although it is not as crucial as other home fixtures like the HVAC, installing one is very helpful, comfortable and very convenient. Water heaters take at least a decade before it will need to be replaced.

For homeowners who require replacing their water heaters, here are some pointers to consider when replacing a new water heater.

Before installing a new water heater, the homeowner has to be sure that their existing water heater indeed needs to be replaced. Real estate and home management website House Logic has shared ways to determine if a water heater needs to be replaced.

“Because water heaters contain few moving parts, only a few things can go wrong. (1) Pilot light on gas water heater flickers out. (2) Circuit breaker for an electric heater trips. (3) Burner or heating element fails. (4) Theromostat breaks. (5) Valve sticks. Repairing or replacing any of those parts is relatively inexpensive: A plumber can do the job for $150 to $300. But if the tank is more than 10 years old, or if it’s leaking, a new water tank likely is in your future.”

Choosing a Water Heater

Home improvement website DIYnetwork.com meanwhile shared pointers on selecting the right water heater, including capacity. In their website, they also detailed what a homeowner can expect during the pull-out of the existing water heater, and the installation of a new water heater.

“The average life span of a water heater is between 8 and 12 years. When it comes time to replace yours, chances are, you’ll pick the same type of unit — either gas or electric. The key is picking the most efficient water heater large enough to handle your needs. An average family of four with two showers will use a 65 gallon unit, but the experts at your local home center can help you come up with the best size. Also, make sure you check the annual cost of operation for the unit. This should be listed on the sticker on the side of the heater.”

When The Heater Needs Replacement

Family Handyman meanwhile came up with a guide on replacing a natural gas-powered water heater. With their guide, they published a caution about proceeding on self-installing a home water heater system. Plumbing Association of San Diego

“When you’re planning a water heater replacement, play it safe. Call your local department of inspections and ask if you need a permit. And make sure a plumbing or an electrical inspector check your work. Your water heater is dead when the tank leaks. The telltale sign that your water heater needs replacing is a slow drip underneath, usually showing up as a trail of rusty water. This means that the steel tank has rusted through and can’t be fixed.”
