The toilet is one of the most important plumbing fixtures in any home. It is one of the most used as well, and naturally, it gets to suffer a whole lot of wear and tear. Ask any home with young children, and they will say that at least once did their flush mechanism failed because kids kept playing with it. Another common toilet problem being faced by young families are toilets getting clogged because children have dumped toys or things into the toilet and attempted to flush these.
Home improvement website The Family Handyman rounded up toilet issues that should never be ignored. One of the plumbing concerns they mentioned in their write-up is a “Running Toilet” or a toilet with non-stop trickling water.
“The mysteries of a running toilet can drive you nuts. Whether you hear water running constantly or cycling on and off, we’ll help you decipher the clues so you can stop wasting water. Hardware stores and home centers carry the parts for almost all toilet repairs. One cause of a toilet running is a flapper that doesn’t seal. If water from the tank seeps around the flapper and into the bowl, the flapper is probably shot.”

Noisy Toilet
Lowes.com also summed up the different toilet issues homeowners may encounter. One of the problems they mentioned in their blog post is what the author described as a “noisy toilet” wherein random sounds come from the toilet even when it is s not being used.
“Make sure the refill tube running from the fill valve is not inserted into the overflow tube. Remove it and secure it outside of the tube if needed. Make sure the flapper seals the flush valve opening. Clean away any sediment that may be preventing a good seal and replace the flapper if necessary. If the steps above don’t solve the ghost flushing, replace the entire flush valve assembly.”

Clogged Toilet
One of the most stressful toilet plumbing issues is a clogged toilet. DIY Network discussed this in their post on the most prevalent toilet problems, and possible ways to deal with the problems. According to their post, the best tools to use are either a plunger or an auger. International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials
“Clogs are the most common toilet problems. Several tools can help you clear a clogged drain. A force-cup plunger is more effective than the common standard type for clearing minor clogs. Insert the bulb into the drain, and pump forcefully. Slowly release the handle, letting a little water in so you can see whether the drain is clear. Repeat if necessary. For serious clogs, use a closet auger.”
