How to Avoid Major Plumbing Disasters

Plumbing disasters can be very catastrophic especially if it leads to indoor flooding. Apart from having to remove floodwaters a homeowner might have to deal with water damage. If not fully addressed right away, water damage can turn into a mold problem that can cause illnesses, and start the premature rotting process of a home structure.

Fortunately there are ways to avoid plumbing disasters, with careful maintenance and attention to details. Home improvement website House Logic for instance shared some maintenance tips that can help homeowners avoid major plumbing issues.

“Learn where your home’s main water shut-off valve is—so if there’s ever a leak, you can go straight there and quickly turn off the water to the entire house. Remove hoses from outdoor spigots in winter to prevent frozen water from cracking the pipes and causing a flood. Add pipe insulation to the plumbing in cold parts of your house—such as garages, basements, and crawl spaces—to avoid frozen pipes (and to shorten the wait for hot water). Never use an exposed pipe as a hanger rod for laundry. Doing so can loosen joints and fasteners.”

Bursting Pipes

One of the major plumbing disasters that could happen to any home is a bursting pipe. In areas where there are really harsh winter seasons, this could be a highly possible occurrence. Home Advisor included frozen pipe prevention among their tips in preventing major plumbing problems.

“Pipe insulation is most important in areas where there is the potential for pipes to freeze and burst. The cost of both piping and insulation is tiny relative to the damages when a pipe breaks. While it is obvious that outdoor pipes need to be insulated, other pipes can still freeze even if they run in a temperature-regulated part of the house. Things happen, electrical power goes down for several hours, or you go on vacation and don’t expect the temperature to drop as much as it does.”

The Family Handyman also came up with a set of tips that could help ensure smooth plumbing, and avoid catastrophic plumbing problems. One of the tips they mentioned is addressing a rocking toilet immediately. California Plumbing and Mechanical Contractors Association

“If your toilet isn’t solidly fastened to the floor, there may be trouble in your future. Any movement of the toilet damages the wax seal. That leads to leaks and ultimately major repairs. To steady a rocking toilet, cut plastic shims to fit and slip them underneath (you may have to remove caulk before adding shims). Then caulk around the toilet and snug down the nuts on the bolts. But don’t crank them down super-tight; that can crack the toilet.”
