When to Call a Plumber for Clogs

For most homeowner, a clogged drain can be annoying but something that would not merit an immediate call to a plumber. Some homes have drain snakes and a plunger that can be used for these types of trouble. Some use dangerous over-the-counter drain cleaners, while others do the Do-It-Yourself route by using boiling water and making soda and vinegar to melt the clog.

There are times though that these solutions may not work, and would need professional remediation. Plumbing experts also say that stubborn clogs may also be a sign of more plumbing problems further down the drain.

So when should a homeowner call for professional plumbing service for clogs?

A New York Times article says that while there are a lot of measures homeowners may take to address clogs, there are signs that should send a homeowner calling for a plumber or drain cleaning service right away. “When more than one drain is backed up or you smell sewer odors, call a professional sewer and drain cleaner.” Read their whole write-up here.

Plumbing Red Flag

Realtor.com meanwhile warned homeowners about persistent slow drains saying that if this has been happening then it is time to call in the pros. This is because shortcut solutions may do more harm than good.

“If you notice your kitchen and bathroom sinks are taking a bit longer than usual to drain, it’s probably best to call in a pro to suss out the source of the clog. Similarly, if your tub, sink, or toilet won’t drain after you attempt to use over-the-counter drain products or plungers, call a plumber, pronto. Trying too hard to release the clog can lead to more pipe damage.”

Prevention is Better than Cure

And while they shared different ways to remedy clogs using tools and common household stuff, they mentioned that prevention is only the surefire way to avoid clogs. California Plumbing and Mechanical Contractors Association

“The best way to deal with a blocked drain is to not let it happen in the first place. Regularly flushing your drains with boiling water or with a mixture of baking soda, cream of tartar and salt can help keep you drains clear.”
