Mira Mesa’s History
WikiPedia also published an entry on Mira Mesa. One of the areas discussed is the history of the area starting around the Second World War when it was utilized by the United States Army as a test area. In the article, it was also tackled how it has become the community that it presently is.
“Starting in 1969 there was a housing boom in the area that now extends from the I-15 freeway in the east to I-805 in the west and is approximately 10,500 acres (42 km²). This was one of the earliest areas of urban sprawl along the I-15 Corridor. Hourglass Field became the site of San Diego Miramar College and Hourglass Field Community Park. The area was built so quickly that it lacked schools, shopping centers, or other services for its thousands of residents.”

The San Diego Union Tribune also discussed the history of the community starting from it inception in the 1950s. According to the article, Mira Mesa got its name from a newspaper publisher who bought a huge land in the area he called Miramar Ranch which literally translates as “Sea View.”
“The community was established in the 1950s as a residential area to support the nearby Miramar Naval Air Station. After the Korean War, the Navy offered the base to the city of San Diego for $1 – but the offer was turned down. Instead, the Navy built it into one of its biggest bases, which became known as “Fightertown USA.” It’s now Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. The community of Mira Mesa stayed small until the first tract homes were built in 1969. An explosion of development starting in the 1970s has turned Mira Mesa into the city’s largest suburb, with more than 75,000 residents.”
