Unusually High Water Bill? Time to Call a Plumber.

Water bills are typically an expense that doesn’t fluctuate a lot throughout the year. When it gets hot outside, our electric bill may rise as we use the air-conditioning, but for the most part, our water bills won’t change much. If you notice a sudden spike in your water bill, it’s time to call a professional plumber to inspect your home (and the sooner the better).

You probably have a leak somewhere.

The most common cause for a spike in a water bill is a leak somewhere in your plumbing. Unfortunately, these can go unnoticed because most of the piping and plumbing that is done on your home is hidden under the home, in the walls, and out of sight. Over time, a small leak can add up to significant costs on your water bill and put you at extreme risk for water damage.

The dangers of an unnoticed leak.

Depending on what type of leak you have, you could be facing a serious problem with your home. Some leaks, such as a leaky faucet or toilet, will not do much other than increase your water bill. While this is important to have fixed, it is not as bad as it could be. If you have a leaky pipe somewhere under your home, for example, not only does this cost you money, but it could also be causing damage to your house. Leaky pipes can destroy foundations, ruin drywall, and lead to mold and mildew growth.

Call a professional plumber as soon as you can.

As soon as you notice you have a high water bill, you should make two calls: to the water company to make sure it wasn’t a billing error, and to a plumber to do a home inspection to spot the leak. A plumber is trained to know what to look for and will find the leak, repair it, and make sure your bill goes back to normal and your house isn’t at risk.
